What We Do
Examples of Current Initiatives
-
Teacher Grants
Each year, staff members across the district are encouraged to submit grant proposal for new initiatives they would like to implement in the school or classroom that is outside of the current district budget. These proposals are evaluated and granted based on impact and innovation and encourage district staff to think outside of the box. Previous grants awarded include a state-of-the-art 3D printing center, updated reading tools, coding robots, outdoor classroom equipment and sensory tools to help with stress and classroom engagement.
-
Dual Enrollment
Dual enrollment (DE) is one of many terms used to describe a program that allows high school students to take a college course and earn both high school and college credit. But access to college-level classes while in high school is not just about college credit. DE can also give students a jumpstart on learning about and preparing for careers. SLEF hopes to provide grants to assist students to earn college credits who might have financial hardships that would otherwise prevent them from accessing higher education.
-
Science Explorers
Focused on students in grades K-5, Science Explorers is a series of interactive STEM programs for elementary students. Offering an expansion to the current district Science curriculum, topics such as Geology, Marine Biology, Chemistry, Space and Human Biology can be explored through hands on experiments that challenge and stimulate young minds.
-
E Sports
Scholastic E sports teams are a rising opportunity for K-12 students that offers a team environment with a base in STEM learning. Colleges currently offer scholarships for E Sports team members and can be a highly profitable and real-world applicable skillset to interested students. The creation of an E Sports lab could additionally provide opportunities for expanded offerings of other educational areas, including advanced graphics design and computer sciences.
-
Reading Accessibility
K-12 students benefit from the constant availability of new and extended reading materials offered free of charge. Putting a wide range high quailty and timely reading options can help not only foster a life-long love of reading but provide opportunities to students for learning, enjoyment and personal improvement within the district buildings.
-
Unified Sports
A part of the Special Olympics, Unified Sports provides an opportunity for Southern Lehigh students with and without intellectual disabilities to pair, train and participate in sports. SLSD has currently begun a Bocce Ball team practice. SLEF has provided the funds needed to supply proper coaching staff for these students.
